Just when you think you're Bad Ass...

...Just when you think you have your race strategy and technique down pat, you've trained on the course, you've run hill sprints on that looooooong bitch of a ramp leading up to the high school, you've monitored the melting on the streets and trail over the past week to gauge whether or not to run with spikes on......  Mother Nature spanks your ass with a dumping of the white stuff.  We woke up to 10 to12-ish inches of new powdered sugar snow.  This put me in a mood.  I got online right away to see if there were any updates as to whether or not the Shamrock Shuffle 5k was still going to take place and to commiserate with fellow disgruntled runners. Usually we're bright eyed and bushy tailed on race day morning....but all this snow?!?!  Fek.... And racetime SO early for just a quick 5k....whaaaaaaaa....poor tay tay.  Just traveling down the mountain and into town was gonna be a bitch.  Everyone was on the internets kvetching about what to do.  Close to 7am, the word came out that the roads were plowed and wouldn't it be a lovely day for a race!?  The accompanying photo of a clear street on the course sealed it.  We'd go for it.  Fueled up and dressed, spirits lightening, we headed out to slip into town, drop off the kiddo at our friends and running brethren, the Ruiz's house and carpool with them to the race.

Thankful that the temps where MUCH friendlier this year(17 degrees) as opposed to last year when it was only a very cruel 2, we dropped off our gear and jogged around the crowd decked out in all things green, Irish and leprechaun-y to warm up.  The start of the race went well enough despite the fact that I was slipping a bit, lots of kick-back, despite my spikes.

It WAS lovely...with the sun peaking in and out
I took full advantage of the downhill portion of the race through the residential area, more then making up for the lost "slip" time...U2's Beautiful Day booming through my ear buds...soul quickening...and when we hit the trail on Westchester LagooWHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?!?!?  They didn't plow the fucking trail?!!?  How the hell......    HARSH.  And trixy of those in charge of the race to FB post that misleading photo!  Adios, chance to beat the shit out of last year's race time like I'd planned!  The rest of the race was spent in a slow schlog through that deep snow praying that I wouldn't snap another ankle.  All grace and form lost as I stomped ox-like in the cattle line past the lagoon.  And The Ramp?  A breeze on account of how SLOW we were all going.
OMFG.  Mooooooooooooooo.
It was a hard race in a way I hadn't yet experienced or expected but still satisfying, after the finish line, ankles intact, with my new Shamrock Shuffle pint glass filled with IPA.   Just like any time I go outside to play, I NEVER regret it!
Miles crossing the finish

Trying to summon a smile of accomplishment on the finish line.  Hey, I beat those young dudes!!!!

We all met up and hung out inside the Bear Tooth theater while ribbons were handed out to top finishers-NOT me, lol!- and the raffle winner was awarded with her weight in beer.  Plans were made  -I frigging LOVE the Ruiz's-for replenishing our tired bodies that evening with tostadas and margaritas at our place.
They giant scale use to weigh out the beer against body weight!  Lean BACK, honey!!!!!

While I came in 4 minutes SLOWER then last year, I placed pretty well for my gender and old age group!

Lackland AFB and a fruitful run!

Today I brought Dylan back to base so she could "show me around".  Let's just say, "Ah, Lackland!  A symphony in beige!" and call it at that.  Nothing of interest here, folks.  Except maybe watching basic trainees doing drills and stopping by the park where they keep all the various cool aircraft from years past.  That I kinda dug!  And I found some really big neato acorns to bring home to Willa there.  HUGE they were.  Happy squirrels at Lackland, yes?  The Plane Park had kind of an Indiana Jones feel to it!  Minus the explosions and Arabs.....
Hmmmm.  And it was....interesting to see the (outside, of course) dorms where Dylan had been living.  Annnnnnnd....
I'm TRYING here, folks, to be generous.  Really, there just wasn't much else.
Oh, well, it can't ALL be fabulous, now can it?!
So we got Dylan's hair did and met up with her BFF to go out to lunch.  I'm glad Dylan has had a close friend these past few months.  I enjoyed talking boy problems with them and eating pasta.  The bummer was that it had to be a shorter day with Dylan since military duties -sans mom from Alaska- called.  Back on base we took some time driving the route through the maze that is Lackland that I would be taking the next day to find my way to the hall they would be graduating in.  After Dylan assured me I didn't need a special pass to get on base for graduation and with the directions entered into my iPhone(foreshadowing here!), I dropped the girls off at their dorm and headed out on my own for the evening.

AWESOME.

More froo frooing for graduation.  Reveling in what girldom she can.

I strive for going on at least one good long run in every new place I visit.  This was my exciting San Antonio run!   While on the River Walk downtown the day before, I ascertained right away that running on it was not going to happen.  Too many people, too slim a walkway, and a high chance of me, Grace, falling into the river.  BUT!  Upon a quick glance at a map I saw that the River Walk extends both north and south from the Downtown area.  I also noticed that there where several missions close to the section of the walk heading south on what is called the Mission Reach Trail.  I thought it might be fun to head southward  to visit each mission and get some photos along the way.  I hadn't actually checked out the distance I would need to run to get to each, but the maps along the trail soon told me I'd be lucky to get to the first one within the time I had allotted for my run!  Ooops!  Not being used to the heat and not carrying water, I played it safe and set out to find the first mission.  The other's would have to wait for the next day and the convenience of my rental car.  I had to switch a "long slow" run into high gear to get there.  This southern part of the walk was wider and vastly more quiet passing first through a historical residential area, parks, and then an old industrial part of town harboring a defunct grainary, artist community, and a brewery.  So many interesting things along the way caught my eye...

Sweaty and hungry but determined to get to that mission
In order to get to Mission Concepcion, I had to break from the Mission Reach trail and head up to street level and through quite the "sketchy" neighborhood.  I picked up my pace for those 3 blocks and found myself in a vast green park with the first glimpse of a crumbling old wall through the trees.  I followed the sidewalk and the mission came into view.  Built on bedrock and made of limestone hewn from the ground surrounding the mission by Hanai Indians- there are even remains of a quarry about 100 yards from the front wall- it's unmoving walls have remained preserved all this time.  I wasn't able to go inside since it was after hours.  Regrettable because apparently one can see the many fine examples of original frescos bearing Moorish, Renaissance and native motifs.  The mission was formidable and beautiful in it's cruciform bearing.  There where a couple of photographers taking advantage of the lighting and the beautiful mission.  It looked like there was a couple having engagement photos taken and another photog was shooting a lovely young woman wearing the most fantastic dress!  A stunning modern blend of traditional Spanish and a funky ombre of lavender to indigo.  I snuck a photo or 2 of her! Following a walkway, one is taken through  a small grove of trees into a quiet and meditative sancticenter.  Old benches of carved stone arcing in a semi-circle around a huge, rather odd looking pile of small sandstone boulders, many looking eerily like human skulls!  A statue of Mary aloft and one below her, a woman knelt in reverence, lit candles and flowers interspersed throughout lessened the severity of the of this slightly macabre alter .  The potency of these female archetypes took me back through the ages before Christianity to a time when the feminine was revered as strength, power, and equally balanced with the masculine...

Following along the stone trail I found a statue of St. Francis, Patron Saint of Animals.  I thought  of Willa, her love for animals and how the story of St. Francis has always captured her.  The statue's presence further lightened the mood in the darkening wood.

Original stone-the latter day additions having weathered away- still standing

Realizing that my run back to the car was going to be a twilit one  hrough a potentially unsafe(in my experience)neighborhood, I begrudgingly grabbed a few more photos of the mission and headed back to the River Walk.  As I ran passed the tiny decrepit houses with rusted out shells of automobiles and car seats for lawn furniture,  I was gifted a paradigm shift.  While extremely low income, yes, I was surprised that the area was fairy litter free.  And the folks enjoying their evening outside or driving by had nothing but a smile or a wave-an elderly lady even called out, "go, go, go!" as I ran by.  I could slow down my nervous pace in this place.  I didn't experience any salacious glances or wolf calls or stares implying I was in the wrong "territory".  I found myself gradually joined by couples old and young, parents towing kiddos in wagons or bike seats, fellow runners and their dogs...all heading to the River Walk to enjoy the evening.  It was wonderful and  heartening  to experience this peace in what most would call the ghetto.
What makes that place so different from others, I wonder.......?

This was one of the best "discovery" runs I've ever been on...... :)

I got to run the 2013 ZOMBIE half marathon yesterday!

I was SO bummed out last year when I couldn't run the Zombie with Miles due to my ITBS injury.  But this year-injury free, albeit a bit undertrained-I ran it with my hunny, various and sundry friends, and Willa ran the kid's 2k!  Since we have not properly trained, Miles and I once again did the one minute Run/Walk split to keep the impact lower.  We came in approx. 2 minutes faster then the Big Wild Life half where we employed the same race method, and only 15-ish minutes slower than our very first half where we ran the whole thing.  We had a great time making our bloody ripped shirts and zombifying our faces.

Water dowsing zombie?

At the start we were joined by many other variations of zombies as well as the random, "OO! a Race! I have to look sexy" jerk-offs in their very UN-zombie sexy kitty, sexy bunny, sexy fairy, sexy whatever costumes.  I don't get it.  It's a ZOMBIE run.  Zombies run after people to try to eat them, therefore when you have a race of runners dressed as zombies running through the woods, it looks like something out of a freaky zombie movie!!!  Why the ra-oh, never mind.  There will always be those who MUST take every opportunity to dress up in a "sexy" costume.  Jesus, at LEAST be a sexy ZOMBIE?  Zombie run 101 lesson OVER.

Well played, my friend!

A girl and her zombie dog with lunch

Happy runners ready to start!

The weather was warm for this time of year and the trail filled with wet colorfull leaves.  Cool fresh air and the deep loamy smell of autumn.  An enjoyable run along the coastal trail opening up into beautiful vistas and then into the woods of Kincade Park.  Awaiting us was a long winding bitch of a hill leading us the last 3/4s of a mile to the finish.  Miles and I were pretty much side by side, but about 100 meters before the finish line I suddenly got tingly and light headed.  Logic trumped ego and I slowed to a walk until it passed.  It seemed like a minute went by before I resumed running and crossed the finish, but apparently it was only 10 seconds because  Miles crossed at 2:15:15 and my time was 2:15:25.   I'm bummed he finally beat me in a race but glad I listened to what my body was saying!
We found Willa and her friend who had just finished their 2k.  2 cute zombie girls with their hard earned bag of loot and proudly displaying their race medals.  It wasn't until we where seeking food inside the park's chalet that I realized the medals Miles and I where wearing were from some other race TWO years ago!!!  I looked around and saw a few people with the cool Halloween inspired ribbons sporting 2013 Zombie Half Marathon medals...but MANY with the 2011 ones!!!  There was a hailstorm of complaints on the Anchorage Running Club's FaceBook page, let me tell you!  Mine included.  Along with much bitching about the fact that the aide stations ran out of water soon into the race!  What shit-ass planning!  All these people of all ages, shapes, sizes, and athletic levels who trained long and hard, and got out there and BUSTED ASS to RUN 13.1 miles...and they are greeted at the end with a 2 year old medal from another race?!?!?  SLAP in the face!  You just don't DO that!  Most might say, so what, it's a hunk of medal, but to us runners it's an important symbol and keepsake.  Idiots.  Finally they responded to the complaints and hopefully we will be able to add the appropriate medals to our collection sometime soon.
Anyhoo....I'm proud, I'm happy, I'm in love with my family and I'm looking forward to more...
I felt great the rest of the day.  Peaceful and calm but still had energy and no major stiffness like in the past.  Today, however, my legs are pretty sore.  Planning on making it a snuggle and watch movies day.

It's WALDO!!!!  There he is!  .....oh....goodness.....

Weeeeeeeeeeee!  Wave to the pilot!

Dead or Alive!

Willa and I got to join Miles on his radio show, Dead or Alive tonight!  His partner is out of town, and since this was Willa's last chance to be on the air before school starts, we thought it would be fun to do a family show.   Miles has been doing the show which features live recordings of the Grateful Dead, Phish, Wide Spread Panic, Pink Floyd era stuff, occasional interviews and other jam-bandy music, for almost a year now and has quite a loyal following for a small city.  It's always  fun to go in with him and help pick out the line up of tunes for the show and chat about stuff on the air.

DJing a radio show revolving around great live music has long been a dream of Miles's.  I'm so happy that he's been given this opportunity!  He's a natural and is having so much fun realizing his dream!

And earlier today...I was able to run 7 miles with no ankle problems!  I AM sore already however....feeling alive, for sure!  hoping it will dissipate by Sunday's half marathon!
